The aim of the exercise was to check whether the yoga program reduced the disability index scores and decreased the rheumatoid factor in participants of both sexes.

The camp had two sessions each day, from 5 am to 7.30 am, and from 5 pm to 7.30 pm. A study based on the Stanford Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) was carried out on participants. At the start of the program, the participants in a group average age of 46.5 ± 9.6 years were assessed on HAQ, hand grip strength, rheumatoid factor, and C-reactive protein levels. These factors were re-assessed on the last day. The results were compared using a t-test for paired data.

Hand grip strength was measured using a standard method and a hydraulic hand grip dynamometer. Participants’ hands were tested one by one, alternately in a single trial. Serum rheumatoid factor and C-reactive protein levels were measured by immunoturbidometry.

Participants at the camp practiced pranayamas or voluntarily regulated yoga breathing, 50 percent of the time that they were there. Loosening exercises – including flexion, extension, and rotation of the shoulder and wrists, known as sukshma vyayama was practiced by them 25 percent of the time. It also comprised of flexion and extension of the elbow and fingers. Added to these was slow and deep breathing, and yoga postures, known as asanas, practiced 25 percent of the whole duration. Some movements were similar to those used in a study on yoga for carpal tunnel syndrome.

The breathing techniques included:

• kapalabhati - high frequency yoga breathing at the rate of 1.0 Hz,

• anulom-vilom pranayama - breathing through alternate nostrils,

• brahmari and udgeeth pranayamas - exhalation with specific sounds, and

• bahya and ujjayi pranayamas - breathing while holding the breath briefly, or with a voluntarily partially constricted glottis.

All participants showed reduced disability scores of the HAQ and rheumatoid factor levels, with an increase in bilateral hand grip strength in male participants.

The researchers concluded – ‘This single group study indicated that a brief intensive yoga program was beneficial in RA, with decreased disability, better functionality and changes in the rheumatoid factor levels suggesting improvement’. However, there were limitations to the study such as lack of a control group for comparison, self-selected group, and a residential facility serving strict vegetarian diet.
<br Any activity which yokes the mind of the man is called yoga. Yoga is a way of life. It is the means & end. Yoga yokes the Jivatma or Jiva to the Paramatman or God. The Jiva travels a long journey to wards moksha with the grace of lord. Without the grace of Lord it suffers the pangs of birth & death. The Lord or Paramatma helps the Jiva to cross the samsara which is inauspicious. Lord krsna in Gita says "yukta asita matparaha" The yogi should sit meditating believing that I (Lord) Supreme.

What are the types of Yoga?
1. Hatha Yoga
2. Bhakthi Yoga
3. Karma Yoga
4. Japa Yoga
5. Jnana Yoga

Hatha Yoga
It consists of asana & pranayama. Yogasanas have been practiced down the ages and have stood the test of time. They are best suited to the human system. Asanas keep body fit & firm, free of many diseases. It prolongs the life, removes the toxins from the system to a great deal. Unlike other types of exercises which work or tones only external muscles, yogic exercises, tones and massages the body machine. It promotes harmony & balance between body and mind with right minds.
There is no upper limit for the practice of yoga. I came across a 82yrs lady who started learning yoga & stunned the participants & onlookers after 10 years i.e. 92yrs. She performed some advanced asanas. She is a great inspiration for the present youngsters. Many aliments of old age like, poor vision, grey hair, joint stiffness, bent back, diseases like, BP, Diabetes; Cancer etc can be handled with more ease.
Yogasanas increases the flexibility even at the old age. Even 30 mts practice of yoga packs so much of energy into the system. Working out in gymnasium drains vital salts and energy from the body & makes the individual to feel haggard. Asanas makes you feel light and fresh whole day. It significantly reduces stress & tension and makes us feel bubbling with energy. They strengthen the weaker parts of the body without panting or puffing. For this reason it is most sought after because even medical physicians & surgeons refer their patients for yoga. The activities of the vital organs such as heart, kidneys, lungs, stomach, intestines, can be easily toned. Minor structure & postural deformities can be easily rectified by practice of yogasanas.
Sagging abdomen, stooping back, hollow chest, drooping shoulders, bulging hips, flabby thighs can be corrected by continuous & devoted practice of yoga. To maintain optimum health, the spinal cord or merudanda & accompanying nerves have to be healthy. This can be achieved very easily by yogasana. Yogic postures or asanas can eliminate obesity particularly central obesity. Central obesity or visceral fat is one of the leading causes for diabetes, heart ailments, spinal problems etc. A special part in yoga is the breathing technique which is lacking majority of the population worldwide. Fuller breathing is achieved by practicing Yogasanas & pranayama. Sound sleep is achieved. Dependence on drugs can be reduced. Mental strength is achieved. Yogasanas teaches you to attain the "Sama"-bhava" ie treating the opposites of life the same. Asana practice promotes satvik state of nature and promotes vegetarianism. It weaves away an individual from vices such as smoking, drinking alcohol, drugs and excessive sex. Yogasanas is a higher spiritual practice which makes or transforms a man's base passions to soft, responsible, agreeable, respectable leading a meaningful life. It has the potency to transform the whole society. It is the hallmark of India but has to be practiced by one and all.
Gita says "When the mind completely kept under control is transfixed in god alone, free from other longing, is said to be a full blown Yogi".
It is a fashion statement to say that one is going for yoga classes with all the trendy dresses. Yoga has to be a worship of god. Hatha Yogi worships God with the body given by god. Since Hatha Yoga is secular this concept is applied to any religion worldwide. The yogi has to realize that this body is a vehicle which assists the soul in performing the dharma. Yoga should not be used by the individual for any other means other than this. Lord says in Bhagavad-Gita that abhyasa and vairaghya are the two pillars of the Yoga practice. Abhyasa means practicing the Yoga at the same time everyday for the rest of the life. There should no be any break in the practice if the sadhaka wants the full benefits. Vairaghys means detachment. Detachments form worldly attractions. Materialism is the bane of the today’s society which plunders the Sadhaka of the happiness & plunges in misery. Wealth, cars, mobile phones, party, rich food, huge apartments, home theatre, affluent friends, credit cards, pride are the evils man is attached to. None of these are permanent, and for this very reason they beget misery for the man. A sadhaka has to consciously keep away form these evils in order to achieve higher goal. Simply speaking the sadhaka has to forsake the sleep after 5AM to practice yoga, japa etc. They are best practiced during brahmamuhurta, 4.30AM to 6.00 AM. This is the 1st step in vairaghya or detachment. Yoga Sastra lays down few prerequisites for a successful sadhaka in yogamarga. Yoga cannot be practiced who does not have control over food. The sadhaka should not either abstain from food or gorge on it. Mitah or moderation is the keyword for health. We are what we eat. So the food should balance, healthy and limited. And also sadhaka should not be obsessed with sleep. Sleeping time is better from 10pm onwards. A man can sleep for 6-7 hours & not more than that. Modern life has jeopardized the sleeping pattern resulting in sleep disorders. So a sound sleep is most important prerequisite for yoga. Otherwise it makes the man fatigued or sick. During deep sleep all our system take rest and purge the toxins out of the body.
Yoga practiced with these prerequisite in mind rids the sadhaka of miseries and delivers happiness.

YOGA FOR CORPORATESYoga and office workers don't usually mix, but they should. When you work in an office you will usually be spending a lot of time hunched over a keyboard and sitting in a seat. It can also be an environment that is prone to produce a whole heap of stress and very few outlets to release it. In this article we examine how these things are bad for your general health and how Yoga can help.Let's start with a little bit about what Yoga is. At it's simplest level it is a very effective form of exercise. It involves flexing the body into static poses and holding them which is a fantastic method of increasing blood flow and circulation through various choke points in the body. Yoga also puts a lot of emphasis on the correct patterns of breathing which allows you body to get the most benefit from each breath of air we take. Expanding from this we take care to un-clutter our thoughts when we are performing Yoga and the more advancement someone makes with the discipline the more focussed and calm they will become. Have you ever told someone to take a breath to calm him or her down? With Yoga it is the same principle. So how does this all help our office worker? An office environment is usually neither a calm nor a healthy place. Most office workers will spend the majority of their day stuck in a chair and often staring at a computer screen or hunched over paperwork or a keyboard. This causes a lot of tension to well up, particularly in the back and shoulders. The legs are also often denied a supply of fresh blood by the long hours spend sitting down. Yoga forces the body to move in ways it would not usually do in an office environment. This can be a very effective way of clearing choke points and allowing circulation to resume it's normal flow. The blood takes valuable supplies of oxygen and nutrients with it wherever it goes and without these supplies the organs cannot operate properly. The more starved the organs become the sicker we will become, so clearly restoring blood flow to the areas that are being deprived of it is an important health priority.Did you know that most diseases are directly caused or antagonized by stress? It's true, and it's a much more serious problem than most people ever know. In an office environment this is even more so. The pressure of deadlines, the constant activity and the need to constantly be on the move are all primary factors in escalating stress levels.imagine for a moment - stopping. Forget about all the things that you need to get done in the next week. Forget about the rent payment and the assignment you have to finish. Forget about your boss and your family and concentrate on one thing. Breathing. Yoga is as much a mental discipline as it is a physical one and it will teach you to clear your thoughts and focus on the activity at hand. While you will certainly benefit from the health benefits of Yoga, the mental benefits can be truly life changing. People who learn Yoga usually deal with stress better and are able to calm and centre themselves when there is turmoil all around them.If you think these benefits would make your life easier then you owe it to yourself to start learning Yoga as soon as possible.

JANUARY 2011

Hollywood star Wesley Snipes teaching yoga in jail
Nevada (US), Jan 9 : Hollywood actor-producer Wesley Snipes, who is serving time at Federal Correctional Institution (FCI)-McKean (Pennsylvania, USA), is teaching yoga, according to reports.

Wesley Trent Snipes, 48, is reportedly serving a sentence on tax issues. They are first tested in animals and then in human beings during clinical trials. The efficacy as well as safety profiles of the drug are tested. In spite of this, some adverse effects of drugs appear only after the drug is used in the general population. These adverse effects are detected though a process of regular monitoring after the drug is released called pharmacovigilance. If the adverse effects are severe or the risks of using the drug outweigh the benefits, or if the drug is ineffective, the country may ban the drug or theDrug Company may itself voluntarily withdraw the drug. Some drugs may cause adverse effects only when combined with particular drugs. In such cases, only the fixed dose combination is banned and not the individual drugs.

A number of single drugs as well as fixed dose combinations have been banned for manufacture, marketing and distribution in India. Some drugs banned in India are mentioned below:

Fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine

Fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine were used to treat obesity. They were widely used in slimming centers. However, they were withdrawn due to reports of diseases of heart valves, fibrosis of the heart and pulmonary hypertension. The combination of fenfluramine and phenteramine, another weight loss pill was particularly notorious for causing heart valve problems and sudden death.

Rimonabant

Rimonabant was particularly effective in causing weight loss. It inhibited the action of substances called cannabinoids in the brain. It has been withdrawn due to serious side effects like depression, suicidal tendencies and seizures.

Sibutramine

Sibutramine is a weight loss pill that has been recently banned since it caused heart related side effects.

Astemizole and terfinadine

Astemizole and terfinadine are antihistamines that were used to treat allergies. They were banned since they could cause a heart condition called polymorphic ventricular tachycardia and even death when used in high doses or with drugs like erythromycin, clarithromycin and ketoconazole.

Phenformin

Phenformin is an antidiabetic drug similar to metformin. It has been banned since it carries a high risk of lactic acidosis.

Rofecoxib and valdecoxib

Rofecoxib and valdecoxib were popular painkillers that were used for arthritis and other painful conditions. They resulted in pain relief without causing gastric side effects. However, they were withdrawn due to concerns of heart attack and stroke with their use.

Rosiglitazone

Rosiglitazone is a drug used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It has been banned due to an increased risk of heart attacks.

After a Hard Day's Work, Why Does a Pizza Seem So Tempting?

Now, we have the reason why a pizza or a chocolate cake seems such an enticing prospect after a stressful day at work.

A new animal study has found that exposure to stress post dieting can increase chances of binge eating.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania examined the behaviour and hormone levels of mice on limited diets. After three weeks of fewer calories, the mice lost 10 to 15 percent of their body weight, similar to human diet weight loss.

"Yo-yo dieting" - temporarily losing weight only to regain it, plus more - is a well-known phenomenon.

Tracy Bale and her colleagues found the mice had increased levels of the stress hormone corticosterone and displayeddepression-like behaviour. The authors also discovered that several genes important in regulating stress and eating had changed.

The researchers put the mice in stressful situations and monitored how much fatty foods they ate. The previously restricted mice ate more high-fat food than normal mice.

"These results suggest that dieting not only increases stress, making successful dieting more difficult, but that it may actually 'reprogram' how the brain responds to future stress and emotional drives for food," Bale said.

"This study highlights the difficult road that human dieters often travel to attain and maintain their weight loss goals. It also suggests that management of stress during dieting may be key to achieving those goals," said Jeffrey Zigman at the University of Texas.

CAN WE LOSE WEIGHT BY DIETING ALONE

The yo-yo diet is one type in a class of many extreme fad diets. Also referred to as "weight cycling," the yo-yo diet is characterized by a cyclical pattern of repetitious loss and gain of body weight. Some of the ways people choose to do this include skipping meals and consuming very few calories. However, the yo-yo diet is an infamously unsuccessful and even harmful weight loss technique. Dieters often experience initial success, but due to its overwhelming toll on the body, the inability to sustain this weight loss in the long run causes dieters to regain all of it back and then some.
He named the dieting process due to its analogous nature to the up-down action of a toy yo-yo. Because of the starvation dieters subject their bodies to, their weight loss consists of losing both muscle and body fat. When the body senses that it is rapidly losing its energy source, it kicks on its famine response, a defense mechanism that aims to protect fat stores by using up lean tissue and muscle for energy instead. This weakens the stability of muscles. Because the amount of muscle in the body is directly proportional to metabolic rate, a loss of muscle also means the loss of metabolic rate. While this process naturally occurs in the case of actual famine, it is not appropriate for a regular weight-loss diet.
The yo-yo diet operates in such a way that it is harder each time to lose weight. As the yo-yo nears the end of its string, the plastic spool starts spinning slower. Likewise, the yo-yo diet follower may find weight loss success harder and harder to maintain as time goes by, leading to depression and demotivation. As soon as the dieter starts attempting to eat normally again, all the weight regained will be stored in the form of fat. The yo-yo diet essentially tampers with a healthy body's normal fat-to-muscle ratio, which is a primary aspect of good health.
Fad diets in general are too extreme on the human body. Many times, radical food deprivation is misleadingly perceived as a substitute for good diet and exercise habits. However, people's susceptibility to the yo-yo diet process is the result of many dynamic factors, including biological factors (genetics, hormones, and biochemicals), emotional and motivational support, and misguided expectations. The environment also plays a huge role, since everywhere we turn we face pressures from images in mass media of supposedly perfect body shapes.

DHANOOR MASA POOJA

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_q8Ewh3HQMPE/TPuq3N585NI/AAAAAAAAAKY/VeYg7ypp9o4/s320/vaikuntha-ekadashi-vishnu.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5547215231639151826" />
DHANOOR MASA POOJA
Dhanur Maasa's special Dharma (in brief): UttarayaNa is Day for devathas and Dakshinaayana as Night. This night starts from Ashaada shukla Ekaadashi . Margashira Shukla Ekaadashi or Dhanur maasa Arambha is the time- AruNodhaya Kaala, being the last phase of the night for Devathas ; The Devathas perform Pooja and offer Huggi to Sri Hari at that time.
Hence during the Dhanurmaasa period, God is worshipped in the early morning. Sri Hari explains the significance of this masa to the Devatas.

More details are available in Smruthi MuktaavaLi-

In this month, preference to be given to POOJA only and not Bhojana- therefore Pooja for Deva, Rushi, Pitru TaRpaNa, Vaishya Devaadi kaRma and feeding Brahmins to be done and he should take food in the PRATHAH KALA itself. The normally perceived boundaries of body image dissolve, and we enter a state of blissful neutrality. In reply to the question "What does Corpse Pose feel like?" one of my teachers always said "Nothing."

To practice Savasana, start by aligning the body. Make sure that your two sides are resting evenly on the floor and that your ears are equidistant from your shoulders. Physically relax the muscles and bones. Imagine that the mass of your body is sinking down into the floor, then spreading out like a puddle of oil. Next calm the senses. Soften the root of your tongue. Cradle your eyes in their sockets and turn them down to gaze at the heart. Release the inner ears to the back of the skull (yet keep them alert to the sound of the breath). Smooth the skin at the bridge of the nose and melt it toward your temples.

Finally, surrender any and all psychological effort (or at least as much as you can). Even as you lie still on the floor, you'll discover that you're still trying, wondering what to "do" in this posture. Drop your brain to the back of the skull. Remember the words of the great sage Abhinavagupta: "Abandon nothing. Take up nothing. Rest, abide in yourself, just as you relax. Savasana is the most difficult or least difficult of all the asanas. You should be 50% tired and 50% hungry. Time is no very important. It may last for 5 to 40 minutes. Longest savasana for me is 1 hr. You feel invigorated after savasana. In fact it is the one any one from 8 to 80 yrs can practice. So why waiting...................................

Yoga Journal - According to Gita, yoga is any spiritual activity that establishes the lost contact with God. There are different types of Yoga. Hatha Yoga, Karma Yoga, Japa Yoga, Jnana Yoga, and Bhakthi Yoga. Yoga for this kali yuga is the Bhakthi yoga. This can be practiced by one and all. Devotional activity directed towards God at all times. Lord Krsna says in Gita that perform all the activities according to varna and ashrama and dedicate all of them to Krsna. Exact meaning for Yoga is upaya. This means a way or margha to divine bliss. We perform asanas 1, the body houses Paramatma and Jivatma. It makes them both happy and makes the body fit to perform sadhana. Only if one realises the real meaning of yoga, practice or sadhana takes place correctly, otherwise one is bound to lose track and waste this life.

Karma Yoga

Work is Worship

Lord Krsna says in Gita that the jiva is endowed with karma according to intrinsic nature and ability to perform the particular work. We have to choose the work accordingly and dedicate that action to God. The activity should be conducive to the self and the society on the whole. This is called as satkarma or righteous action. While performing one should not be worried about the outcome of the karma. The Lord says that self has right to do the karma and the fruits of action is governed by the Lord. It is wrong to expect the fruits immediately because, the fruits may arrive at any time. The Lord dispenses the fruits at the right time. Accepting this doctrine denotes the Total Surrender to the Lord. If the people of the world perform their day to day karma as a duty (like a mother feeds the child with no expectation), then the earth would be a heaven to live in. He is unborn, indestructible and eternal. He is not killed when his body is slain. BG 2.20
Having restrained them all, he should sit in contemplation meditating that I am his Supreme Lord. Of him, who has verily his senses under control, wisdom is steadfast. BG 2.61
Perform the ordained duties. For action is better than non action. Even the maintenance of the body would not be possible without some action.
